SOME DIVALI SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
GENERAL SAFETY
- Remain vigilant of your surroundings at all times
- Do not venture into unfamiliar areas alone
- Keep a cell phone easily accessible, inform family/friends of your whereabouts
- Keep water, sand and first aid kits nearby
- DEYAS
- Ensure deyas are placed on a level surface so they do not topple over
- Place away from flammable items
- Do not leave unattended for long periods of time
- Supervise children when near to deyas, especially when trying to light them
- Ensure oil is filled to a level that will not cause it to overflow
- FIREWORKS
- Children should only use fireworks under adult supervision
- Fireworks should only be used outdoors (NB. your porch, garage, etc are not considered as outdoors)
- Don’t attempt to relight used fireworks
- Don’t lean over fireworks to light them
- Keep hair and clothes tied back when lighting fireworks
- Secure animals as the noises can be disruptive to them and lead to unpredictable behavior
- STARLIGHTS
- Carefully dispose of starlights immediately after use as they remain hot and can lead to injuries if left lying around
- ‘BUSSIN’ BAMBOO
- Exercise extreme caution
- Be careful when using pitch-oil
- Ensure this is done in the presence of experienced individuals
- ENJOYING INDIAN DELICACIES
- Wash hands before indulging in any tasty food or sweets, especially after lighting of deyas, fireworks, etc.
- Ensure any leftover food is stored correctly to avoid food poisoning
