SOME DIVALI SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1.  GENERAL SAFETY

• Remain vigilant of your surroundings at all times
• Do not venture into unfamiliar areas alone
• Keep a cell phone easily accessible, inform family/friends of your whereabouts
• Keep water, sand and first aid kits nearby

2.  DEYAS

• Ensure deyas are placed on a level surface so they do not topple over
• Place away from flammable items
• Do not leave unattended for long periods of time
• Supervise children when near to deyas, especially when trying to light them
• Ensure oil is filled to a level that will not cause it to overflow

3.  FIREWORKS

• Children should only use fireworks under adult supervision
• Fireworks should only be used outdoors (NB. your porch, garage, etc are not considered as outdoors)
• Don’t attempt to relight used fireworks
• Don’t lean over fireworks to light them
• Keep hair and clothes tied back when lighting fireworks
• Secure animals as the noises can be disruptive to them and lead to unpredictable behavior         

4.  STARLIGHTS

• Carefully dispose of starlights immediately after use as they remain hot and can lead to injuries if left lying around

5.  ‘BUSSIN’ BAMBOO

• Exercise extreme caution
• Be careful when using pitch-oil
• Ensure this is done in the presence of experienced individuals

6.  ENJOYING INDIAN DELICACIES

• Wash hands before indulging in any tasty food or sweets, especially after lighting of deyas, fireworks, etc. 
• Ensure any leftover food is stored correctly to avoid food poisoning
